The History of Global Billiards

The Story Behind the Tables.

Humble Beginnings

Founded more than five decades ago by a young immigrant couple starting a new life in California. Global has built a 58-year legacy in manufacturing bar pool tables, home tables, full-size 9-foot tournament billiard tables, and electronic payment systems – reflecting its founders’ determination and belief in billiards as a lasting part of American culture.

Born in Scandinavia, Torben and Solveig Gramstrup arrived in Los Angeles in 1957 and quickly secured work at Acme Billiards, then the only billiard manufacturer west of the Mississippi. Within five years, they launched their own company, producing both residential and commercial tables.

A Name You Can Trust

With more determination than resources, Global began in a small manufacturing facility built on the belief that quality craftsmanship still mattered. Inspired by the California Dream and fueled by a rapidly expanding housing market, the company focused on blending style, durability, and superior playability – quickly setting itself apart. Through relentless hard work and a growing reputation spread by word of mouth, sales steadily increased, transforming a modest workshop into a respected name in the local market.

An Eye Towards Growth

Towards Growth

What began as a local billiard manufacturer grew into a national presence in the 1970s. As demand increased, the company relocated to a larger facility in Gardena, CA and expanded its lineup to 18 models offered in 12 different finishes. Appealing to both commercial venues and the booming home market, the brand successfully moved beyond its regional roots to compete on the national stage.

Facing a slowing economy and the challenges of a recession, Global pivoted by expanding into manufacturing coin-operated pool tables. This shift allowed the company to reach bars and bowling centers where affordable recreation was still in demand. By combining their signature craftsmanship with durable, revenue-generating tables, Global not only weathered the economic downturn but also created new revenue streams that laid the foundation for long-term growth.

1990s

Resurgence

Global saw a surge in demand in the late 1980s and early 1990s for its 9-foot commercial tables, fueled in part by renewed public interest in pool following the release of The Color of Money. The company enjoyed some of its strongest years, shifting focus away from home tables and expanding its lineup of traditional coin-operated tables to include its first upscale model. To keep up with growing demand, Global purchased a 30,000-square-foot facility in Carson, CA, where the company continues to operate today.

Modernizing Payments

Payments

Global expanded its lineup of upscale coin-operated pool tables to six distinct models, blending durability with stylish, modern design. Building on this momentum, the company launched the Matrix bill acceptor system in 2005 – a versatile electronic upgrade that enabled operators to convert most coin-operated tables to accept bills, modernizing payment options while reinforcing Global’s longstanding reputation for quality and innovation.

Continued Evolution

Evolution

The second-generation Matrix is released, offering improved reliability and compatibility for most other company’s coin-operated tables. As cashless payment trends accelerated, operators increasingly requested the ability to integrate credit card readers into the system, creating a demand for more flexible, modern payment solutions that could meet the evolving preferences of players.

Today

Always Innovating

Global now focuses exclusively on manufacturing the third-generation Matrix and distributing cash and cashless payment systems for pool tables and arcade games. As player payment preferences continue to evolve, the company is once again at the forefront – introducing seamless, contactless payment solutions to the U.S. and Canadian billiards markets, with no app download or physical card required. Carrying forward a proud three-generation legacy, Taylor Gramstrup represents the future of Global Billiard Mfg. at a recent industry tradeshow.
